This soon to be released Media Center came really close to breaking into one of our top three positions. This Media Center, which was showcased at the 2007 CES conference, has a Blu–ray disc reader/burner and supports most TV types including HD.
We looked at the Sony VAIO XL3, which should be available around March or so. It will come pre–installed with Vista Home Premium.
Processor:
The Sony VAIO XL3 will come with a Core 2 Duo E6400. This is one of the best processors available mainstream right now.
Memory:
This system comes with 2GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive, which is more than enough for most uses. You can also add Blu–ray archiving and boost your long term storage of video even more since they hold 25–50 GBs each.
Video/Audio:
Unique to this system, is the GeForce 7600 GTL, which we haven’t seen anywhere. It is a 256 MB video card that should perform well. For audio it has Sony Sound Reality technology with DSD.
I/O Devices:
This system comes with a combo drive that works with DVDs, CDs and Blu–ray discs. It also will come with a 2–in–1 card reader, four open USBs, a remote control, a wireless keyboard/mouse combo and a highly functional HDMI connector.
Price/Value:
The XL3 is expected to cost around $3300, which is pretty pricy for most people. But if you need extensive archiving it may be handy to have Blu–ray disc write ability.
Support/Warranty:
Sony offers a one–year parts and labor warranty and you can contact them by telephone or email.
Summary:
This looks like it is going to be a good performer. Although it might be better from some if it had a FireWire port, more card readers and an FM tuner.
