Several unique terms and phrases describe the features of hardware we review on this site, some easier to grasp than others. This list briefly defines terms relevant to Media Center PC.
Ratings ProcessorWe looked at the type of processor as well as the GHz and front bus speed. Those that offer dual processors like the Pentium D or the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core are good at multitasking and scored higher in our review. Memory Media Centers require a large hard drive for video recording, systems that only offer 80GB cannot store volumes of video, so we looked for hard drives of 250GB or more. In terms of RAM, 1GB or 1024MB will easily run most applications, whereas gaming requires at least 2GB. Video/Audio Media centers should provide all of the ports or connections necessary to connect to TVs, stereos and speakers. Most provide several types of audio and video options. Support/Warranty Setting up a system can be complicated, so it is helpful if the manufacturer offers extraordinary customer service in the form of technical support by telephone, email and chat. It is also helpful if the company publishes online help such as FAQs, tutorials, drivers and downloads. We also looked for companies that offer free shipping and extended warrantees. MEMORY RAM (MB)Random Access Memory Hard Drive (GB) This device reads/writes data onto a hard disk. VIDEO & AUDIO Graphics Card TypeOften referred to as video cards, converts visual information into data that can be input into a display medium (monitor or TV). Multimedia computers should have a good graphics card, either a high–end NVIDIA or ATI Radeon. Surround Sound Configuration All media systems must support surround sound, often 5.1, which is five speakers and one subwoofer. I/O DEVICES CD ROMReads CDs. DVD ROM Reads DVDs. CD RW Drive Can burn CDs. CD/DVD RW Drive Has the ability to burn DVDs. Media Card Reader Media card readers come in different configurations, often 8–in–1, which means it has the ability to read eight different types of media sticks. MEDIA CENTER FEATURES Remote ControlA wireless device used for remote access. Wireless Keyboard/Mouse Combo Convenient to use with a media center, has keyboard and mouse on one board. FM Tuner Can receive FM signals. TV Tuner TV tuners can receive television signals and help you record your favorite programs. A computer with two tuners can display one channel while recording another. DVI Digital Video Interface HDMI High–Definition Multimedia Interface Noise Reduction Added Often certain materials are used or extra care taken to limit noise by reducing friction, adding variable speed controls, ribbon cables and so on, to reduce the temperature and decrease noise. SUPPORT/ WARRANTEES Parts & Labor Warranty (YR)Most companies offer at least a one–year warranty, some offer extended warrantees at no extra cost. Phone Support Manufacturer or distributor offers free or paid telephone technical support. Email Support Website posts an email address or provides an email form for technical inquires.
